When someone searches "dentist in Málaga", "restaurant in the Centro" or "renovations in Teatinos", Google shows a map with three businesses before anything else. That block, the so-called local pack, takes most of the calls. If your business is not there, for many customers it does not exist. This guide explains what Google looks at to decide who appears and what you can do about it this week.
We write it from Love & Siesta, a web design and local SEO studio in Fuengirola, based on what we see every day in businesses across Málaga and the Costa del Sol.
What Google looks at to put you on the map
Google ranks the local pack on three criteria, and all three can be worked on:
- Relevance. Whether your profile and your website clearly say what you do and for whom. A badly chosen category or an empty description rules you out before you start.
- Distance. How close you are to the person searching. You don't control it, but you can appear in more searches if your profile defines your service area well and your website talks about the neighbourhoods you work in.
- Prominence. How well known you are to Google: reviews, mentions on other websites, consistent data and a website with authority.
Step 1: a Google Business Profile that is genuinely complete
The Google Business Profile (formerly Google My Business) is free and it is the heart of all this. The minimum to compete in Málaga:
- Your real business name, without adding keywords. "Clínica Dental García" yes; "Clínica Dental García Cheap Dentist Málaga" no: Google penalises it and customers distrust it.
- The right primary category and secondary categories only if you genuinely offer them. The primary category weighs more than any other decision on the profile.
- Exact address, phone number and opening hours, with special hours on public holidays and in season. A customer who turns up and finds you closed leaves a one-star review.
- Service area if you travel to clients: Málaga, Torremolinos, Benalmádena, Fuengirola, Marbella… only where you really work.
- Your own photos of the premises, the team and the work, with a new one every month. Profiles with recent photos get more clicks; those with months of inactivity fade away.
- A link to your website and, if you have them, to bookings or the menu.
Step 2: reviews, and reply to every one
Reviews are the prominence factor you can move fastest. Three rules that work:
- Ask for the review right after a good service, with the direct link your profile gives you. A QR code on the counter or a WhatsApp message when a job is finished is enough.
- Reply to all of them, the good ones too, with your name and without templates. Google sees it, and so does the next customer.
- Never buy reviews or ask friends to invent visits. Google detects them and can suspend the profile.
A profile with 15 real, answered reviews almost always beats one with 80 unanswered reviews and photos from three years ago.
Step 3: the same data everywhere
Google compares your name, address and phone number on your website, on your profile, in directories, on TripAdvisor or on social media. Every difference (a "C/" here and a "Calle" there, an old phone number in a directory) costs you trust. Check that they are identical everywhere and fix or delete the profiles you no longer control.
Step 4: a website that backs up the profile
Google cross-checks your profile with your website. If the website does not mention Málaga, does not show your address, loads slowly or looks bad on mobile, the profile loses strength. What your website should have to support local rankings:
- Your name, address and phone number visible in the footer, with a link to your Google profile.
- One page per service, with the name of your area written naturally: not repeated, but present.
- Local business structured data (LocalBusiness), which tells Google in a format it understands who you are, where you are and what you do.
- Flawless speed and mobile display: most local searches happen while walking down the street.
- If you have Spanish-speaking customers, a properly translated Spanish version. In Málaga and on the Costa del Sol it is a real competitive advantage.
If your current website does not tick these boxes, take a look at our web design in Málaga service: it launches with this local SEO base included.
The mistakes we see most in Málaga businesses
- Duplicate profiles created by a former employee or a previous agency. They need to be claimed and merged.
- Unverified profile, or one verified with an email nobody can access any more.
- Generic category ("company") instead of the specific one ("tax adviser", "physiotherapy clinic").
- Opening hours never updated since opening day, with the resulting trickle of negative reviews.
- Website without an address or any mention of the city, because "it's already on Google".
How long it takes and how much it costs
Completing and tidying the profile shows within a few weeks; steady reviews and a website that backs it up give solid results in three to six months. You can do it yourself with this guide. If you would rather we did it, our local SEO plan starts at €300/month, no minimum term, with your Google profile managed and a monthly report.
Frequently asked questions
Does my business appear on Google Maps if I don't have premises?
Yes. You can create the profile as a service-area business, hide the address and define the areas where you work. That is the case for plumbers, renovations, photographers or consultants.
How long does Google take to verify a new profile?
It depends on the method: by video or phone it can be the same day; by postcard, one or two weeks. Until it is verified, the profile is barely shown.
Do I need a website to appear on Google Maps?
It is not compulsory, but without a website you compete at a disadvantage against those who have one: Google has less information about you and fewer reasons to trust you. For a small business, a one-page landing page is enough.
